Who Is Barbatos?

Barbatos is the 8th spirit of the Ars Goetia, the first book of the Lesser Key of Solomon (he's ranked 6th in the earlier Pseudomonarchia Daemonum), described as a Great Duke and Earl commanding thirty legions of spirits, with four kings as companions leading his troops. He appears as a woodland archer, arriving when the sun is in Sagittarius, and his name derives from the Latin barbatus, meaning "bearded."

His defining gift is understanding the voices of animals — birdsong, the barking of dogs, the lowing of cattle, and beyond — a trait that shows up consistently from Johann Weyer's 16th-century account through the later Ars Goetia. He also uncovers treasures hidden by other magicians' enchantments, knows things past and future, and reconciles friends and those in positions of power. He's noted as retaining part of his former rank in the angelic Order of Virtues, a holdover from before his fall.

Later folklore expands his story further, placing him as a member of the Wild Hunt — the spectral hunting procession said to ride out particularly when Satan himself leads it — adding a wilder, more untamed dimension to a demon already defined by his fluency with every living creature's voice.
