Leopardite

• Composition: Primarily a variety of quartz porphyry containing small quartz phenocrysts embedded within a fine-grained matrix of quartz, orthoclase, albite, and mica.
• Appearance: Distinctively spotted or streaked due to inclusions of iron and manganese hydroxides, giving it a resemblance to the fur of a leopard.
• Colors: The base rock is typically off-white or creamy white, with dark colored zones ranging from dark gray to black, or sometimes brownish, which appear as spots when cut.
• Hardness: Ranges from 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, though some stones labeled as leopardite may have lower hardness.
• Origin: Belongs to the jasper group, which are sedimentary rocks.
• Locations: Found in various locations worldwide, including Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Africa.
• Formation: The circular or orbicular patterns are believed to result from the gradual mineral deposition around impurities or bubbles in the rock over time, often formed in volcanic settings with high silica content.
