  • Hardness: Jet has a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 4, making it relatively brittle. 
  • Specific Gravity: Jet has a specific gravity of 1.3 to 1.34, making it lightweight. 
  • Occurrence: Whitby Jet, known for its high quality, is found in the Whitby Mudstone Formation in England. It has also been discovered in other locations worldwide, including Spain, France, Russia, and the United States. 
  • Comparison to Coal: While jet is sometimes classified as a type of lignite coal, its formation process is distinct from most fuel-grade coals.
