Glaucophane is a blue-gray to black, sodic amphibole mineral, often associated with blueschist metamorphic rocks formed in subduction zones.   • Chemical Composition: Glaucophane is a sodium magnesium iron aluminum silicate hydroxide.
  • Color: The blue color is characteristic of glaucophane and is due to the presence of iron and magnesium in its structure.
  • Hardness: Glaucophane has a Mohs hardness of 5-7.
  • Pleochroism: Glaucophane can exhibit pleochroism, meaning its color appears to change depending on the viewing angle.
  • Occurrence: Glaucophane is found in metamorphic rocks of gabbroic or basaltic composition that have experienced high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphism.
