✨ Who Is Belenus?

Belenus is an ancient Celtic healing god whose cult is attested across much of the Celtic world, from Gaul and Britain to northern Italy. His name is usually connected with a Celtic root meaning “bright” or “shining,” making him a god of radiance and vitality. Roman writers identified him with Apollo, and many inscriptions read “Apollo Belenus,” though he kept his own Celtic character and cult. His name appears on around fifty-one inscriptions.

🌿 Healing Springs

Belenus was closely tied to medicinal springs and therapeutic sanctuaries, where the sick sought cures. Shrines at sites such as Sainte-Sabine in Burgundy and Aquae Borvonis show his association with healing waters. Worshippers left votive offerings there, including clay figures of swaddled infants, reflecting the importance of healing and childbirth at these sites.

☀️ Light & the Sun

Belenus is traditionally read as a god of the sun and light. Coins and carvings show him with rays of the sun, and his name is linked to bright, shining qualities. Roman sources describe his image appearing in the sky during the siege of Aquileia, where he was honored as the city’s protector.

🔥 Beltane & the Fires

Belenus is commonly linked to Beltane, the spring fire festival. The name of the festival is thought to preserve his own, and the fires lit at Beltane were traditionally associated with encouraging the sun’s warmth. This link comes from later traditional and folk accounts, so it’s best understood as a long-standing association rather than a firmly documented ritual.

🛡️ Protector of the City

Under Roman rule, Belenus retained strong local importance, particularly in Noricum and the Alpine regions. He was honored as a protective deity, guarding cities and their people as well as springs and livestock.

🕯️ Modern Devotion & Practice

Today, many people honor Belenus at Beltane, through sun-focused rituals, and in healing work that connects to natural springs and water. Devotion often focuses on gratitude for light, warmth, and healing. Modern practice is a reconstruction, since the ancient evidence is mostly inscriptional and archaeological.
