Smudging tools are sacred instruments used in rituals of purification, protection, and energetic alignment. Rooted in Indigenous American and other ancestral traditions, smudging typically involves burning sacred herbs—such as sage, sweetgrass, or palo santo—and wafting the smoke to cleanse people, objects, or spaces of negative or stagnant energy.
While the herbs do the energetic clearing, the tools that may accompany them—like abalone shells, feathers, tongs, and stands—help honor the elements and direct the ritual with intention and care.
Abalone Shells
Symbolizing the element of water, abalone shells are traditionally used to hold burning herbs or charcoal. They safely catch ash while offering beauty and elemental balance to your ritual.
Use to hold sage bundles, loose herbs, or resin on charcoal
Fill with sand or earth to diffuse heat and protect the shell
Represents the sacred union of water, earth (herb), fire (flame), and air (smoke)
Feathers or Fans
Used to guide smoke during smudging—toward a person, object, or around a room. Often connected to air spirits and bird medicine.
Charcoal Discs & Tongs
For safely burning resins, loose herbs, or ritual blends. Tongs help you light and manage charcoal without injury.
Smudge Stands or Bowls
Fire-safe holders for resting burning bundles or keeping your shell off heat-sensitive surfaces.
Place herbs or charcoal in the abalone shell (with sand for safety if needed).
Light with intention, allowing it to smolder and release smoke.
Waft the smoke using your hand or feather—move it around your body, home, altar, or object.
Extinguish fully when finished and offer gratitude to the elements.
Cultural Note:
Smudging is a sacred act with deep roots in Indigenous American ceremonies. When using these tools, do so with reverence and cultural respect. Consider sourcing herbs ethically and honoring the traditions that inspire your practice.
