Purpose:
The Vegvísir is believed to be a visual spell of protection against getting lost, especially at sea.
Origin:
While commonly associated with Vikings, there's some debate about its true origin, with mentions in the Huld Manuscript and The Galdrabok, a grimoire.
Not a literal compass:
While it's often called a "compass", the Vegvísir's eight "arms" are thought to be charms against specific dangers of travel, rather than a literal compass.
