Egyptian Pantheon: Thoth

by Tabitha Kosicki November 12, 2025 4 min read

Thoth (Egyptian: Djehuty, pronounced JEH-hoo-tee or TEH-hoht) is the Egyptian God of Writing, Wisdom, Magic, and Sacred Knowledge, revered as the scribe of the gods and the one who maintains cosmic balance through understanding and truth.

He is depicted as a man with the head of an ibis, or sometimes as a baboon, both animals associated with the moon, calculation, and mystical insight. His presence is calm, intellectual, and deeply magical — the still mind at the center of the universe.

Thoth is the patron of scribes, magicians, scientists, priests, alchemists, and all seekers of knowledge, offering both practical wisdom and esoteric understanding.

Mythology & Lore

Thoth is one of Egypt’s oldest gods, predating the pyramids themselves. He is said to have brought writing to humanity, created the hieroglyphs, and recorded the words and deeds of the gods.

He is the divine arbitrator who restores peace when gods quarrel and is deeply tied to Ma’at, the goddess of truth and order. They work together to maintain the cosmic balance — she is the principle, he is the record-keeper and enactment of it. In some myths, they are husband and wife.

Role in the Weighing of the Heart

In the afterlife, Thoth stands beside Ma’at, recording the outcome of the Weighing of the Heart ceremony. He writes the fate of every soul, serving as both scribe and witness.

Healer and Magician

Thoth uses words as magic. In myth, he recites the spells that help Isis revive Osiris and protect Horus. His name appears throughout the Egyptian Book of the Dead, guiding souls and empowering the living.

Lunar Deity and Regulator of Time

Thoth is associated with the moon, which he uses to measure time, create calendars, and regulate sacred festivals. In some myths, he makes the moon full again after its waning, representing renewal and illumination.

Patron of Science and Mathematics

He is the god of:

  • astronomy

  • geometry

  • medicine

  • architecture

  • law

  • record-keeping

He is the divine mind — the logos — that makes civilization possible.
