Egyptian Pantheon: Ma'at

by Snowshoe Ewing November 12, 2025 3 min read

Ma’at is one of the oldest and most enduring deities in the Egyptian pantheon. She emerged at the dawn of creation, when the sun god Ra brought light and order out of chaos (Isfet). Ma’at became the cosmic foundation of existence, ensuring that the stars moved in their courses, the Nile flooded at the proper time, and life itself remained in harmony.

She emerged with Ra from the river Nun, and is seen as the daughter of Ra. She is often seen standing beside him in his solar barque, helping maintain divine order as it travels through the sky and underworld. She is also closely associated with Thoth, god of wisdom, who records the outcomes of the Weighing of the Heart — the ceremony that determines the fate of the soul in the afterlife. She is his wife in some tales.

In that sacred judgment, the heart of the deceased is weighed against Ma’at’s Feather of Truth. If the heart is lighter, the soul is found pure and granted eternal life; if heavier with falsehood, it is devoured by Ammit.

Ma’at’s presence was central to Egyptian law, governance, and spirituality. Pharaohs were called the “Beloved of Ma’at,” and their duty was to uphold her balance in the world — to rule with fairness and ensure the prosperity of all under her laws.
