Osiris (pronounced oh-SIGH-ris, from Egyptian Asar, Ausar, or Wesir) is the God of Death, Rebirth, Agriculture, and the Eternal Cycle of Renewal. Once a benevolent king upon the earth, he became the divine ruler of the Underworld (Duat), presiding over judgment, transformation, and the promise of immortality.
Osiris embodies the cyclical rhythm of nature — the seed buried in darkness that rises again in green life. He is not a god of decay, but of regeneration; not of finality, but of transcendence through change. Through his story, the ancient Egyptians came to understand that death is merely a doorway, and the soul eternal.
Born of Geb (Earth) and Nut (Sky), Osiris was the first divine king of Egypt, ruling with wisdom and justice. His reign brought prosperity and agriculture to humankind — he taught people to plant crops, honor the gods, and live in balance with the natural world.
But jealousy grew in his brother Set, who craved his throne. Set deceived Osiris into lying within a beautifully crafted chest, which he sealed shut and cast into the Nile. When Isis, his devoted wife and sister, discovered the treachery, she searched the land until she found Osiris’s body.
Set, enraged, dismembered him into fourteen pieces and scattered them across Egypt. Yet Isis, with her sister Nephthys and the help of Anubis, gathered the pieces, reassembled his body, and through her divine magic, breathed life back into him.
Though Osiris could no longer walk among the living, he was reborn in spirit — becoming the Lord of the Underworld, the Judge of Souls, and the Green God of Renewal, symbolizing the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. From their union, Horus was conceived — heir to the throne and the living embodiment of Osiris’s legacy.
