Celtic Pantheon: Rhiannon

by Tabitha Kosicki October 03, 2025 4 min read

Rhiannon (pronounced hree-AN-on) is the Welsh Goddess of Horses, Enchantment, and Sovereignty, known as a queen of the Otherworld (Annwn) and a symbol of endurance, truth, and grace under trial. Her very name may derive from Rigantona, meaning “Great Queen.”

She rides between worlds, bringing messages of transformation and rebirth, guiding seekers toward integrity and spiritual maturity. To call upon Rhiannon is to invoke steadfastness — the strength to rise above false judgment and to walk one’s own path with elegance and purpose.

Mythology & Lore

Rhiannon’s tale appears in the First Branch of the Mabinogion, one of the great epics of Welsh mythology. She is a fairy queen of the Otherworld, first seen riding a pale horse — her pace so slow it seems deliberate, yet no one can catch her, no matter how fast they ride. When Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed, calls to her directly instead of chasing her, she stops — smiling — and tells him that this is what he should have done from the start.

They marry, but their happiness is soon tested. After giving birth to their son Pryderi, the child is stolen by unseen forces, and her attendants, fearing blame, falsely accuse Rhiannon of killing and devouring her own baby. As punishment, she is made to stand at the gates of the palace for years, telling her story to strangers and carrying visitors on her back as penance — the goddess reduced to beast of burden, yet never losing her nobility.

Eventually, her son is miraculously found and returned, and Rhiannon’s name is restored. Her forgiveness and dignity through injustice mark her as a paragon of sovereignty and endurance.

In later tales, she marries Manawydan fab Llŷr, another noble of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and together they face magical trials with wisdom and perseverance. Through all her stories, Rhiannon’s message is clear: grace is stronger than shame, and truth will outlast illusion.
