Elegua – Orisha of Crossroads, Openings, and Divine Communication

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

• Elegua (also spelled Eleggua, Eleguá, or Eshu-Elegbara) is the trickster, messenger, and guardian of the crossroads in Yoruba religion and its diasporic practices such as Santería, Candomblé, and Lucumí. He is the first Orisha honored in any ritual, as he opens and closes all spiritual paths.

• Known for his playful, unpredictable, and clever nature, Elegua holds the keys to fate and fortune. He communicates between humans and the Orishas and governs destiny, choice, and unexpected change.

• As a divine trickster and gatekeeper, Elegua teaches lessons through paradox and redirection. He is both childlike and wise, reminding us that all paths begin with a choice—and all choices have consequence.
