CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:
The Morrígan, whose name means “Great Queen” or “Phantom Queen,” is a powerful figure in Irish mythology associated with war, death, fate, sovereignty, and shapeshifting. She often appears as one goddess or a trio (Badb, Macha, and Nemain), embodying the cycles of life, death, and rebirth.
A goddess of the battlefield and of personal transformation, she foretells fate, inspires warriors, and walks the liminal spaces between life and death. She can appear as a beautiful woman, a crow, or a hag—symbols of her ability to shift form and carry prophecy.
In modern pagan and witchcraft traditions, the Morrígan is revered for her fierce protection, guidance through change, and empowerment of those reclaiming their sovereignty.
