CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Kuan Yin (also spelled Guanyin, Quan Yin, or Kannon) is the East Asian goddess and bodhisattva of compassion, revered in Chinese Buddhism, Taoism, and many other spiritual traditions. Her name means “She Who Hears the Cries of the World.”
Though originally based on the male bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara from Indian Buddhism, Kuan Yin became deeply loved in her feminine form across East Asia, symbolizing limitless mercy, healing, and unconditional love.
Kuan Yin is associated with water, lotuses, and the moon, and she offers comfort, forgiveness, and spiritual protection to all beings—especially the suffering, the lost, and those in need of maternal grace.
