Tara – Tibetan Goddess of Compassion, Swift Action, and Liberation

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Tara is a highly revered Bodhisattva and goddess in Tibetan Buddhism, known as the “Mother of Liberation.” She embodies compassion in action, responding swiftly to the cries of those in need.

  • Tara is believed to have been born from the tears of Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, and took the vow to remain in female form across all lifetimes to aid in the liberation of all beings.

  • She manifests in multiple forms, the most common being Green Tara (active compassion and protection) and White Tara (healing, longevity, and serenity). Each form expresses a different facet of her divine mercy, wisdom, and fierce grace.
