Obatalá (pronounced Oh-bah-tah-LAH) is the Orisha of Creation, Wisdom, Peace, and Purity, known as the Elder of the Orishas and the Father of Mankind. He is the divine artist who molded the first humans from clay and breathed into them life and reason.
Often seen as serene and white-robed, Obatalá governs clarity of mind, ethical judgment, compassion, and spiritual alignment. He represents the gentle strength of leadership grounded in peace, and the wisdom that comes from patience and humility.
Among the Yoruba and diasporic faiths—Ifá, Santería (Lucumí), Candomblé, and others—Obatalá is regarded as the highest of the Orishas, chosen by Olódùmarè (the Supreme Creator) to bring order and consciousness into the world.
According to Yoruba creation stories, when the universe was young, Olódùmarè sent Obatalá to form the Earth from the waters below. He descended from the heavens on a chain, carrying a snail shell filled with sand, a rooster, and a palm nut. He poured the sand upon the waters, and the rooster scratched it wide, forming the land. From that sacred soil, Obatalá began to shape human beings from clay.
However, in one tale, he became intoxicated on palm wine during his work, and some of the forms he molded came out imperfect. When he awoke and realized this, he vowed to protect and bless all those born with physical or mental differences. For this reason, Obatalá is also regarded as the patron of people with disabilities, teaching that all forms of creation are sacred.
He is married to Yemayá, the Mother of the Oceans, and together they represent the harmony between stillness and flow, sky and sea, thought and emotion.
Obatalá’s calm, impartial wisdom makes him a judge, healer, and reconciler among the Orishas, ensuring balance and peace in the world.

In Yoruba and Afro-Caribbean traditions, Obatalá manifests in several forms, expressing different facets of his divine energy:
A younger, more dynamic form representing justice and righteous strength. He wields a sword of light and clears away corruption.
A gentle, contemplative form, patron of wisdom, patience, and serenity.
Mediator and reconciler among Orishas and humans, bringing harmony where there is discord.
The form most closely linked to shaping humanity, associated with craftsmanship, creativity, and divine artistry.
Each aspect of Obatalá is unified by coolness, light, and clarity — his essence is pure consciousness itself.
Obatalá is deeply venerated throughout West Africa, Cuba, Brazil, and the diaspora.
Altars: Drape in white, with silver or clear glass items, candles, and bowls of water or milk.
Mantras/Chants: “Maferefun Obatalá!” (Blessings to Obatalá) or “Obatalá, orisha funfun, bringer of peace!”

To honor Obatalá is to honor peace itself — the clarity of still waters, the quiet mind before creation, and the unshakable wisdom that shines in every soul.
