Freyja (pronounced FRAY-yah) is the Norse Goddess of Love, Beauty, Magic, and War, a being of radiant power who moves freely between tenderness and ferocity. She is the Lady of Seiðr (Norse witchcraft), the Mistress of Cats, and Queen of the Valkyries, collecting half of all warriors who fall in battle to dwell in her great hall, Fólkvangr.
Freyja embodies the sacred truth that love and strength, pleasure and power, are not opposites but reflections of one another. She is sensual yet strategic, compassionate yet fierce, and her presence calls us to reclaim the fullness of the divine feminine—body, heart, and will.
Freyja’s name means “Lady,” and she is of the Vanir, the ancient tribe of fertility and nature gods, who joined the Aesir after the war between them ended in peace. She is the daughter of Njord, god of the sea, and the twin sister of Freyr, god of fertility and prosperity.
Freyja is most often associated with love, beauty, lust, wealth, fertility, and magic. Yet, unlike Aphrodite or Hathor, her stories also tell of battle, death, and sovereignty. She rides into war in a chariot pulled by cats and receives half of the honored dead—those who die bravely—while Odin claims the rest for Valhalla.
She is also the foremost practitioner and teacher of Seiðr, a form of Norse sorcery involving trance, prophecy, and transformation. In the sagas, she teaches this powerful magic to Odin himself, giving him the knowledge of fate and spirit that only women once held.
Freyja’s tears are said to turn into gold when they fall, and her laughter into flowers. Her famed necklace, Brísingamen, was forged by dwarves—a treasure of immense beauty symbolizing desire, art, and the creative fire of passion itself.
Though she weeps for her lost husband Óðr, who wanders the world in disguise, Freyja never ceases to rule her domain. She is the Goddess of Sovereign Desire, teaching that longing is not weakness, but sacred motion toward beauty and truth.
