Nordic Pantheon: Thor

by Tabitha Kosicki November 08, 2025 3 min read

Thor (Old Norse Þórr, from Thunraz, “Thunder”) is the Norse God of Storms, Strength, and Protection, son of Odin and the earth goddess Jörð (Earth). He is the protector of gods and humans alike, wielder of the mighty hammer Mjölnir, and defender of cosmic order against the forces of chaos and destruction.

Thunder is his voice, lightning his weapon, and rain his blessing. Though fierce in battle, Thor’s heart is steadfast — his power guided by loyalty, love for humankind, and reverence for the natural world.

Mythology & Lore

Thor’s legends are told throughout the Eddas and sagas, where he stands as the great champion of Asgard and Midgard, ever at odds with the Jötnar (giants) who threaten the world’s balance.

His weapon, Mjölnir, forged by the dwarves Brokkr and Sindri, is both a hammer of destruction and a consecrating tool of blessing. It protects the living, hallows marriages, and sanctifies the dead. When Thor swings Mjölnir, lightning cracks across the heavens, banishing chaos and renewing the sacred order.

He rides the chariot drawn by Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr — two goats he can slaughter and resurrect each night by blessing their bones, symbolizing the eternal cycle of death and renewal.

In the Prose Edda, Thor is described as the strongest of all gods, but also the most approachable — the god who cares deeply for humankind, defending Midgard from harm. Despite his immense might, he values honor, fairness, and protection over tyranny or cruelty.

He is fated to face Jörmungandr, the World Serpent, during Ragnarök — a final battle where they will destroy each other, marking the world’s end and rebirth.
