Eir (pronounced AIR or AY-eer, Old Norse for “mercy” or “help”) is the Norse Goddess of Healing, Medicine, and Compassion. She is both physician and protector, known for her deep knowledge of herbs, remedies, and sacred healing arts. Among the Aesir, she is called upon by both gods and mortals when sickness, injury, or despair takes hold.
Though quiet and understated in the myths, Eir’s power is profound—she represents the divine mercy that mends body and spirit, the still hand that closes wounds, and the wisdom that knows when healing must come through release.
Eir appears in several of the Poetic and Prose Eddas, always associated with healing and compassion. She is said to dwell on the mountain Lyfjaberg (“Hill of Healing”), where she stands guard with other divine maidens who assist those who pray for recovery and protection.
As handmaiden to Frigg and sometimes to Freyja, Eir serves as the goddess-physician, attending to warriors and women alike. She is invoked during childbirth, illness, and moments of pain—physical, emotional, or spiritual.
Some traditions describe her as a Valkyrie, one who chooses not the slain but the saved—guiding those near death back to life. Others see her as a divine spirit of medicine itself, governing the art of healing through intuition, herbcraft, and mercy.
Eir’s mythology reminds us that healing is not weakness but courage: the will to face pain with patience, to nurture what has been wounded, and to remember that recovery is sacred work.
