Egyptian Pantheon: Nekhbet

by Tabitha Kosicki November 08, 2025 4 min read

Nekhbet (pronounced NEKH-bet) is the ancient Vulture Goddess of Upper Egypt, revered as a divine protector of the pharaohs, mothers, and all sacred life. She is the Winged Guardian, embodying maternal strength, regal power, and watchful protection from above.

Her name derives from Nekheb, her city of worship near modern-day El Kab, where she was honored since the Predynastic Period (circa 3200 BCE) — making her one of the oldest known deities in the Egyptian pantheon.

In every image of kingship and divine rule, Nekhbet’s wings stretch wide over the royal crown — a timeless symbol of divine protection and legitimacy.

Mythology & Lore

Nekhbet began as the local goddess of Nekheb, venerated as a great white vulture, the sacred scavenger who cleanses death and renews life. Over time, she became the national goddess of Upper Egypt, paired with Wadjet, the cobra goddess of Lower Egypt. Together, they formed the Two Ladies, who represented the unification and divine balance of the kingdom.

Her symbol — the vulture with outstretched wings clutching the shen ring of eternity — appears above royal cartouches and temple lintels, proclaiming divine favor. Pharaohs wore her image upon their crowns, trusting her as a guardian of kings, armies, and bloodlines.

In myth, Nekhbet was present at every birth — divine, royal, or mortal — hovering as the spirit of motherhood and sovereignty. She nursed and protected Horus and the young pharaohs, sometimes called “She Who Embraces the Child.”

Though she is a vulture goddess, her role is not grim — rather, she symbolizes nurturing from death, the cycle of protection through renewal, and the fierce maternal power that shields and defends all life.

She is often paired with Mut, Isis, or Hathor, representing the protective and maternal aspect of the Great Mother. Her feathers were amulets of blessing, her name invoked for safe childbirth and guardianship over the soul’s journey.
