Egyptian Pantheon: Horus

by Tabitha Kosicki October 24, 2025 3 min read

Horus (pronounced HOR-us) is the Egyptian God of the Sky, Royal Power, and Divine Protection, known as the eternal Avenger of His Father Osiris and the Protector of Egypt’s people and pharaohs. He represents the unbreakable link between the heavens and the earth, embodying the eye that sees all, the spirit that soars above chaos, and the rightful order restored through courage and wisdom.

To gaze upon the falcon’s flight is to understand Horus—the sharp vision that pierces illusion, the noble heart that guards truth, and the steady strength of rightful leadership.

Mythology & Lore

Horus’s story lies at the heart of Egyptian mythology. He is the son of Osiris and Isis, born after Osiris’s murder at the hands of his jealous brother Set. Conceived through Isis’s magic, Horus was hidden and raised in secret marshlands until he came of age to challenge Set for his father’s throne.

Their struggle was long and fierce, symbolizing the eternal battle between order and chaos, light and darkness. In one version of the tale, Set gouged out Horus’s left eye, but it was later restored by the god Thoth. This act gave birth to one of Egypt’s most sacred symbols—the Eye of Horus (Wedjat)—representing healing, protection, and divine sight.

Ultimately, Horus triumphed, reclaiming his father’s throne and restoring balance (Ma’at) to the cosmos. From that day forward, each reigning Pharaoh was seen as the living embodiment of Horus on Earth, ensuring that his vigilance would forever guard Egypt.

There are many forms of Horus, reflecting his dominion over both earthly and celestial realms:

  • Horus the Elder (Heru-Ur): The primordial sky god, embodying the vast heavens.

  • Horus the Younger: Son of Isis and Osiris, the avenger and divine heir.

  • Ra-Horakhty: “Horus of the Two Horizons,” a fusion of Horus and Ra, representing the rising and setting sun—the cycle of rebirth and eternal victory of light.
