Celtic Pantheon: Danu

Danu (pronounced DAH-noo or DAH-nuh) is the Great Mother Goddess of the Celts and the namesake of the Tuatha Dé Danann—mother to the race of gods that inhabited Ireland before humans. She is the primordial source of life, the river of creation, and the spirit of the fertile earth itself. 

Though little of her myth survives, her presence flows through the roots of Celtic spirituality: she is the essence of nature, the cycles of birth and renewal, and the wisdom that nourishes gods and mortals alike. Danu represents both sky and river, a divine current that connects all things. Danu was also known as Ana, Anu, and Dana in Ireland and on the European continent, but she was called Don in Wales. Some sources say Danu was an alternate name for the war-goddess Morrigan, who was the wife of the Dagda. Danu was married to Bilé, the god of death.

She is the matron of sovereignty, fertility, and wisdom, mother to many deities, and guardian of the natural world. Her waters nourish all life—physical, emotional, and spiritual—reminding us that to honor Danu is to honor the Earth and the flow of spirit within it.
