Angels: Uriel

by Tabitha Kosicki March 11, 2026 3 min read

Archangel Uriel, whose name is often translated as “Light of God” or “Fire of God,” is traditionally regarded as the archangel of wisdom, illumination, prophecy, and divine insight. While figures such as Michael and Gabriel appear prominently in canonical scripture, Uriel’s presence emerges most clearly in Jewish apocalyptic texts, early Christian writings, and later mystical traditions, where he is revered as the angel who brings understanding to humans in need.

Uriel carries a light that is meant to clarify — the moment when confusion gives way to comprehension, when a hidden pattern becomes visible. He is the angel of mind awakening.

Uriel in Ancient Texts – Guide to Prophets

Uriel appears most prominently in the Book of Enoch and other early Jewish writings that explore the structure of the cosmos and the mysteries of divine justice. In these texts, Uriel is one of the archangels tasked with guiding prophets through visions of heaven, judgment, and the future of humanity.

In Enoch’s journeys through the heavenly realms, Uriel explains the movements of the stars, the order of seasons, and the mechanisms by which the universe remains balanced. His role is not merely a messenger, but an interpreter — translating divine order into human understanding, or rather, as much understanding as we mortals can have.

This association with celestial knowledge made Uriel a guardian of:

  • Astronomy and natural law

  • Sacred knowledge

  • Divine justice and balance

Through Uriel, the heavens became a book that can be read. Multiple books, actually! The Book of Enoch, as well as other early Christian and Jewish texts, mention Uriel, and he is recognized as canon in a few churches.

The Flame of God – Symbol of Illumination

Uriel is often depicted holding a flame or lantern, symbolizing the light of understanding. Unlike destructive fire, Uriel’s flame represents clarity, the ability to see what was previously hidden.

This fire illuminates:

  • Ethical dilemmas

  • Spiritual confusion

  • Hidden motives

  • Patterns within chaos

In mystical traditions, Uriel’s fire is sometimes described as the light of conscience, the quiet inner voice that reveals truths even when they are uncomfortable. Uriel’s power is less dramatic than that of other archangels, yet no less transformative. Quiet understanding can change a life as profoundly as a clap of thunder.

Uriel and Divine Justice

Some traditions associate Uriel with the angel of repentance and moral awareness. In this role, he is the one who helps humanity recognize error and return to balance.

Rather than punishing wrongdoing, Uriel reveals it — allowing people to see the consequences of their actions clearly. In this way, wisdom becomes the path back to harmony.

He is also linked in some writings to the angel who warns Noah of the coming flood, illustrating his role as guardian of humanity’s survival through foresight and instruction.

Uriel in Christian and Mystical Tradition

Although Uriel does not appear in the canonical books of the Bible accepted by all denominations, he holds a strong place in Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and mystical Christian traditions.

In angelic cosmology, Uriel is sometimes described as one of the four archangels stationed at the corners of the world, representing illumination from the east — the direction of sunrise and awakening.

This symbolism reinforces his role as the angel who brings the dawn of understanding.

Uriel as Archetype – The Mind Illuminated

Spiritually and psychologically, Uriel represents the moment when knowledge becomes wisdom. He governs intellectual clarity, ethical awareness, and the ability to perceive truth beneath confusion.

Uriel’s presence is often felt as:

  • Sudden insight

  • Calm reasoning during crises

  • Moral clarity

  • Inspiration in study or learning

  • Recognition of deeper patterns

His influence reminds seekers that enlightenment is not necessarily a mystical experience — it is also the disciplined, scholarly pursuit of understanding.

Uriel calls to those who:

  • Seek truth through study and contemplation

  • Struggle with ethical decisions

  • Work in teaching, research, or guidance

  • Feel drawn to uncover hidden knowledge
