Lilith (Hebrew: לִילִית, meaning “night” or “of the night”) is the primordial goddess of independence, sensuality, and power, often called the First Woman and the Queen of Shadows.
Once vilified as a demon or succubus, she has been reinterpreted as the archetype of the liberated feminine spirit — unyielding, self-possessed, and unwilling to submit to domination. Lilith’s energy is lunar and nocturnal, representing truth without apology, desire without shame, and creation through shadow.
Lilith’s earliest origins lie in Sumerian and Babylonian mythology, where she appears as Lilitu, a wind or night spirit associated with storms, fertility, and protection of the divine feminine. Over time, her image evolved — in Jewish mysticism, she became the first wife of Adam, created from the same clay as he.
When Adam demanded submission, Lilith refused, declaring herself his equal. Speaking the Ineffable Name of God, she flew from Eden into the wilderness rather than live beneath another’s rule. For her defiance, she was vilified — branded as a seductress, a killer of infants, a demon consorting with spirits of night.
But beneath the patriarchal retellings lies an older truth: Lilith was the first woman to claim her sovereignty, the first to say “no” and mean it. She represents freedom at all cost — the reclamation of power, sexuality, and identity that has long been suppressed.
In Kabbalistic and esoteric traditions, Lilith is the shadow counterpart of Shekhinah — the feminine aspect of divinity — and the embodiment of hidden wisdom. Her domain is transformation through self-knowledge, integration of shadow, and the sacred reclaiming of what has been exiled.
Equal to Adam, she symbolizes the sacred feminine before subjugation — autonomous, sexual, whole.
