In the Jewish apocryphal and mystical texts, he is identified with Enoch, the patriarch of Genesis 5:24, who “walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him.” Enoch’s transformation into an angel is the core of Metatron’s story. The name is not found in the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament, and its origin is unknown and debated.

📜 The Heavenly Scribe

The Babylonian Talmud places Metatron in heaven recording the merits of Israel, and the Targum Pseudo-Jonathan describes Enoch as “Metatron the Great Scribe.” His role as a keeper of records and a witness to human deeds is a central part of his character in later mystical writing.

🌿 Enoch’s Ascent

The fullest account comes from 3 Enoch (Sefer Hekhalot), a Hekhalot text usually dated to around the fifth or sixth century CE.
